Ask anyone, what springs to mind when you think of Singapore?
The majority will refer to landmarks within the Marina Bay area.
There are the supertrees in Gardens by the Bay – havens of biodiversity, and lit up spectacularly at night. There are the striking towers of Marina Bay Sands, connected by a ship-like suspended platform, and filled with restaurants, gardens and swimming pools. There are the nightly fountain and light shows, decorating the bay for all to see.
What is striking about this iconic area is that it has only graced the Singaporean skyline since 2010. In a little over ten years, Marina Bay has put Singapore firmly on the map for experiential, innovative and biodiverse design – transforming its place identity into something entirely new.
But more than that, this area delivers a place that is simply enjoyable to spend time in. The gardens are beautifully connected by footpaths and cycleways, the shopping mall has courted the world’s leading designer brands, and the night-time spectacular enthrals tourists and locals alike.
This is big-budget placemaking, and the money has been well spent.
