The island aesthetic.

Wooden beams, no walls, and tall, pointed roofs – this is the architecture of tropical life. Buildings have adapted here to account for a warm climate and heavy rain. Open sides ensure the easy flow of air, while tall ceilings help to dissipate heat, and steep roofs allow the fast run-off of water.

While this was all once true, today Tahiti is an island blessed with air-conditioning and modern drainage technology. This architecture continues, therefore, mainly for show. It is found most often in hotels and tourist areas. Off the beaten track, not so much.

But it is the island aesthetic that keeps tourists coming back.
